Reception

A very warm welcome to all our Reception children, families and prospective families.

At Cathcart Street Primary School, Reception is the first year that your child will attend school all day. The children are expected to arrive at school for 9:50, will stay at school until the end of the day at 3:25. All children are entitled to a free school lunch which is served at 12:00.

In Reception, the children will learn through an increasing number of adult led lessons, some of which include daily Literacy, Phonics, Maths and Topic lessons. There remains a large focus upon child centered and play based approaches to learning were the children will have the opportunity to consolidate and extend their learning through continuous provision.

In Reception there we continue to focus upon the the Prime Areas of Communication and Language, Personal Social and Emotional Development and Physical Development and strongly encourage children to develop the independence, curiosity and enthusiasm for learning needed to support them in becoming life long learners.

In our classroom and outdoor area we learn and explore through a range of experiences and learning opportunities. Our classroom and outdoor areas include:

  • Water
  • Sand
  • Reading area
  • Writing/mark making area
  • Construction area
  • Role play area
  • Small world area
  • Craft area
  • Calm space
  • Playdough area
  • Fine motor challenge area

The children thoroughly enjoy sharing their outdoor space with the younger Nursery and 2 Year Old children, modelling good communication and social skills and it allows then to share their knowledge and skills.
